Skydome

Reusable formwork for the construction of long-span reinforced concrete slabs

Skydome is a modular, reusable formwork system made of recycled ABS plastic, designed for the construction of cast-in-place two-way waffle slabs. Thanks to its dome-shaped geometry, the system creates a matrix of voids that, once the concrete is poured, forms a slab with monolithic orthogonal ribs, ensuring high structural performance with a significantly reduced use of material.

Compared to traditional solid slabs, Skydome allows weight reductions of up to 30%, decreasing the self-weight of the structure and improving seismic behavior. The reduced mass results in lower stresses on load-bearing elements, enabling longer spans and greater architectural freedom.

The formwork is lightweight, easy to handle, and simple to install, thanks to a modular support system that ensures fast operations and on-site safety. The plastic does not adhere to concrete, allowing quick stripping and continuous reuse, reducing both costs and environmental impact.

The resulting slab can be left exposed, enhancing the aesthetic value of the waffle slab while also improving the building’s acoustic performance thanks to the dome shape.

Skydome is ideal for public buildings, schools, commercial facilities, and residential structures that require large spans, lightness, and high architectural quality.

Advantages

  • COST-EFFECTIVE
  • The dome geometry creates structural voids that significantly reduce concrete consumption compared to solid slabs, also allowing direct placement on H20 timber beams, resulting in savings on shoring works.
  • ON-SITE SAFETY
  • Skydome is completely self-supporting and therefore does not require any underlying reinforcement or special safety devices. The system can be assembled from below, ensuring maximum safety for site operators.
  • STRUCTURAL TECHNOLOGY
  • The dome shape of Skydome enables the construction of two-way ribbed slabs with large spans, providing maximum structural efficiency thanks to the reduced self-weight of the slab.
  • FAST STRIPPING AND REUSE
  • Concrete does not adhere to the plastic, allowing easy and rapid stripping without the use of release agents. All system components can be cleaned using only water.
  • MULTIPLE REUSE
  • The shape and material characteristics ensure a high number of reuse cycles, significantly reducing long-term costs.
  • EASY HANDLING
  • Lightweight and manageable components that can be handled on site without the use of cranes. Their stackable shape allows efficient transport and compact storage, even in limited or humid spaces.
  • AESTHETIC RESULT
  • The finished slab can be left exposed as an architectural feature or covered with a suspended ceiling, offering full aesthetic freedom in design.
  • CERTIFIED SUSTAINABILITY
  • Skydome is made from recycled ABS and is EPD certified, contributing up to 9 LEED credits. Reduced concrete usage, formwork reuse, and fewer transport requirements improve the overall environmental footprint of the project.

SYSTEM TO LIGHTEN WAFFLE SLABS

Skydome SYSTEM TO LIGHTEN WAFFLE SLABS

SKYDOME is a modular formwork system in ABS recycled plastic used to build two-way ribbed slabs completely on-site. This product allow to create a bi-directional slab inspired on the caisson, i.e. to build a monolithic casting of orthogonal ribs with an upper slab of adequate thickness.

The system was designed to decrease the weight of traditional full-concrete slabs. The dome-shaped forms create a matrix of voids surrounded by orthogonal ribbing, thus producing a two-way configuration very suitable for large-spanning slabs.

The SKYDOME system includes a range of ABS domes of various depths (H 200, 250, 300, 350 e 400 mm), set on special interlocking supports, which make assembly fast and easy.

HOW MANY TIMES CAN THE MATERIAL BE REUSED?

ABS recycled plastic is extremely resistant, therefore all GEOPLAST formwork can be reused more than 100 times.

WHEN CAN THE SYSTEM BE DISMANTLED?

SKYDOME system can be dismantled even after 4-5 days. However, it is necessary to post-prop the slab until full curing of the concrete. In every case, the right dismantling time must be approved by the plan design according to the type of concrete used on-site.
